Diwali has a special significance in Indian culture. A reason to celebrate life, a break from the monotony of work, a time to unclutter our life, an annual encounter with family & friends and nowadays, it’s another reason to shop.

In the midst of all this, I came across an interesting concept called Ikigai, a Japanese concept that means ‘a reason for being’. The World Economic Forum did a study on the happiness and health enjoyed by the Japanese and found that Ikigai was “the secret ingredient” amongst all the others, for a happy Japanese life.

According to Dan Buettner, an expert on Blue Zones – the areas of the world where people live longest, the concept of Ikigai pervades the life of the islanders of Okinawa. Combined with a particular diet and support network of friends or ‘moai’, Ikigai is helping people live longer on Okinawa as it gives them purpose, he says. He provides a karate master, fisherman and great-great-great-grandmother, all of whom are more than 100 years old, as examples.

In Okinawa, Ikigai is thought as ‘a reason to get up in the morning’, a reason to enjoy life. It is a zone where our potential and interest come together. Each one of us has an Ikigai and it is up to us to discover it. Technology like our game based assessments can help you identify your potential.
